It was night and there were strange noises could be heard from everywhere. It was also raining heavily. Although the weather was bad and forest was full of dangers yet the king Vikramaditya did not fear a bit. He climbed the tree to bring Betal down and soon he began to walk with Betal on his shoulder.
The Betaal spoke: “O King , I pity you as you are making untiring efforts without relaxing for thing like me. You should be enjoying a comfortable sleep in your palace”
Vikram didn’t speak anything because any word from his mouth would keep Betal right back on the tree.
So Betaal starts his story………
This is story from the time the ruler of Kishanagar was Rajendra. Rejendra was kind and strong King. He cared about his people very much, just like his own children. After long period of marriage he and his queen, Prema, were blessed with to a wonderful and beautiful daughter. They name her Sona. As she was the only child, she enjoyed a lot of freedom. She was clever not only in studies but also in warfare. She was skillful in the use of the bow and arrow and sword. When she reached marriageable age, her parents began searching for a suitable groom for her.
But Sona disagreed to their proposal saying her parents that ,”Father, I want that my husband should be more skilled than me in all activities. He should overpower me in fight. So you may make an announcement whoever wishes to marry me has to fight wuth me”.
The King Rajendra was very proud of her daughter and so the announcement was made.
The royal messengers were sent to the Kings and Princes of all near and far kingdoms. Thinking that Sona is a girl and any body would overpower her, many fighters came. They thought that they can easily defeat a girl and since she is only child of the King they will get whole kingdom after King Rajendra.
But Sona defeated everyone, and they had to go back disappointed. Uday Varma, the prince of Ayodhyapuri had also come over. He watched the fight every day, by joining the crowd of spectators. He carefully watched how Princess Sona fought and the different strategies she adopted to counter.
Within few days Uday Varma had learnt all her strategies, and the next day he was ready to fight with her. Though Uday was not a worrior yet he fight too cleverly. Uday varma was successful in defeating the Princess. When Uday varma came forward to present himself to the King and queen, King asked Uday varma from where he had learnt to fight.
Uday Varma replied “I have watched all strategies adopted by Sona, by watching her during fight”.
Sona suddenly said to him that “You have defeated me, but I can not marry you”
King was surprised by Sona’s decision.
Sona turn back to Uday varma and said “You are wise, just think and find the reason why I can not marry you”
Uday Varma thought for something and said . “Yes, you are right. I should not marry you.”
The king and queen were surprised as Uday Varma too accepted Sona’s decision quickly. They were unable to find the reason.
The Betal concluded the story and asked King Vikramaditya, “Why did she say he did not deserve her hand in marriage inspite of his victory over her? Tell me Vikram, if you would not tell the right answer you are not a King of Justice”
Vikram Replied, “Betal, Uday varma had learnt strategies by watching Sona’s strategies while fighting just as someone learn from his teacher. According to the Indian mythology father, mother and teacher are all like a god. As Sona realized that Uday varma was first her student and then a suitor and she was not willing to accept that relationship for the purpose of marriage. Uday varma too thought on the same manner and realized that he could not marry Sona
As king spoke a word so Betaal flew back to the tree. Vikram with his sword in his hand went after the Betaal once again.
